Barbie Forteza talked about her recent controversial statement
Kapuso Primetime Princess Barbie Forteza reacted to being lectured on “divorce” in a recent interview.
Barbie had a controversial statement saying that she wanted to get married in Las Vegas because there is divorce there, which is not currently acknowledge in the Philippines.
Her statement caught the attention of the online community and netizens shared various reactions. One of the people who commented on this is a lawyer.
Just recently Barbie Forteza retracted her statement about dating with the intention of marriage. This is because, during a press conference a few weeks ago, the actress had said that she was the type of woman who dates with marriage in mind.
“Date to marry po ako, so until I’m ready and I’m really, really sure of the person I’m gonna go out with, hindi ako makikipag-date,” the Kapuso actress said.
During her guesting on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda,” Barbie was asked about that statement again, and her response was different. She explained that she had made the “date to marry” remark before being lectured by lawyers about marriage.
“Actually, yes. I said that in an interview before having been schooled by a lot of our very respectable lawyers out there with regards to marriage. And now, maybe I would like to take that back because I don’t… I mean, I’m not open to marrying anytime soon, even if I fall in love. So baka ‘date when I’m sure’ na lang (sabay tawa). Pero hindi na parang to marry pa,” she explained.
One of the instances where the actress was likely “lectured” was when filmmaker-lawyer Atty. Joji Alonso called her out after she expressed a desire to get married in Las Vegas specifically to have the option of divorce.
In a Facebook post, Atty. Joji explained that the Philippines does not recognize a divorce obtained abroad by two Filipinos. Under Philippine law, they would remain married since divorce is not legal in the country.
When Boy Abunda asked her about this, the actress admitted she was unaware that marriage laws in the Philippines worked that way. Barbie Forteza added that even her mom had no idea aboit this. For her, a lot of people are not aware of this as well.
