Ian Veneracion Reveals Reason Behind His Alter Ego ‘Stephn’

Ian Veneracion Steps Into New Identity As ‘Stephn’ & Opens Up Why

IAN VENERACION – Veteran actor Ian Veneracion is exploring a different side of himself through music, introducing a fresh identity called stephn.

Seasoned actor Ian Veneracion is stepping into a fresh artistic phase as he officially introduces his musical identity, “stephn,” marking a new direction in his already multi-faceted career.

In an exclusive interview with PUSH ABS-CBN during a press huddle on Tuesday, April 7, Ian opened up about why he chose to create a separate musical persona. According to him, this approach helps him disconnect from the expectations attached to his well-known name in the entertainment industry.

“In psychology, I think they call it the ‘Batman effect’ para matanggal ‘yung ego fatigue and all the expectations and pressures from trying to be whatever,” he shared. “It’s like taking on this creative persona and just being chill and expressing yourself, being raw. It’s just used to orient me towards the path of authenticity.”

He also emphasized that separating “stephn” from “Ian Veneracion” allows listeners to experience his music without bias. “I’m hoping that they listen to the songs with fresh ears. I think my face and my name get in the way of them listening to it with fresh ears. So [‘pag hindi mo kilala], at least mapakinggan mo ‘yung kanta as it is.”

Known for his versatility as an actor, painter, and licensed private pilot, Ian shared that music gives him another avenue for self-expression. For him, “stephn” is not about hiding behind a new identity, but rather shedding limitations.

“Itong ‘stephn’, it’s not just another mask. Actually, it’s like removing the mask of my ‘Ian’ mask and getting out of that box,” he explained. “It’s just going with the raw aspect of my personality that just enjoys playing and creating without being pressured about anything. It’s just self-expression. It’s finding lang your authentic self.”

This pursuit of authenticity is also reflected in his EP titled Searching for stephn. “Searching for stephn because that’s me,” he affirmed.

Ian explained that creating music under this persona allows him to work without the pressure of audience approval. “’Yung ‘stephn’ part kasi is a certain headspace na walang pakialam… It’s like singing to the clouds,” he said, noting that the focus is no longer on impressing listeners but simply expressing himself.

He added that every lyric and note comes from a genuine place. “I’m not expecting that it’s for everyone.”

“I’m not attempting to make something that could resonate with everyone. It’s just I’m trying, I’m going for something that just feels really authentic and real. Ang tanong lang namin sa studio or sa lahat ng decisions namin musically, ‘masarap o hindi?’”

Describing their creative process, he said decisions are based purely on instinct and feeling. “Wala kaming pakialam sa tama’t mali. Pag masarap, game. Pag hindi masarap, tapon.”

Beyond music, Ian also reflected on family life, sharing that he often plays music for his wife and children. When asked about the secret to a happy family, he stressed that it takes effort and understanding.

“It’s hard work too. It’s very hard work,” he said, noting that relationships require adjustment, patience, and commitment. Despite the challenges, he emphasized that it is deeply rewarding, especially when raising children.

Ian Veneracion’s Searching for stephn is now available on streaming platforms.
