Nicanor Briones Watching E-Sabong: House Panel Won’t Ignore Issue

The House Committee on Ethics speaks about the issue involving Nicanor Briones.

AGAP Party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones admitted his mistake, and the House Committee on Ethics is not ignoring this controversial matter.

“Hindi ako nag-e-sabong. Sa totoo lang, may nag-message sa akin sa messenger. So, tinignan ko lang naman. Hindi ko naman akalain na mayroon palang magkukuha ng aking mga private messages… Pero okay lang ‘yun. Dahil malinis ang konsensya ko. Hindi naman ako nagsasabong…”

Nicanor Briones

This is the explanation of AGAP Party-list Rep. Nicanor Briones after admitting that he was the solon who was caught watching e-sabong while the House of Representatives was in session.

He apologized for it, but stressed that his only fault was checking a message during a session.

Recently, the House Committee on Ethics reacted to the issue involving the solon and aired that it is “not ignoring and will not ignore” the photos and videos where Briones was caught watching what he claimed to be a “practice” cockfight on his phone.

Panel chair 4Ps Party-List Rep. JC Abalos assured the public that the matter will go through a “proper process” to hold him accountable for the action he has committed. He said, “I would like to let everyone know na hindi po natin binabalewala o babalewalain ang insidenteng ito. I want everyone to expect, asahan niyo po, na tutuparin ng Committee on Ethics ang aming tungkulin.”

According to Abalos, the ethics committee will soon meet to officially lay down the guidelines for handling complaints involving the conduct of House members.

Meanwhile, Briones has highlighted that his “conscience is clear” and in case he is called for a probe, he assured that he will be ready to face them. In a previous article, Briones called for a total ban on online gambling after he was caught watching cockfighting online.
