SUV Driver at NAIA Says Panic Led to Tragic Accident
The SUV driver who accidentally rammed passengers at NAIA explained that panic led to the tragic accident.
On Sunday morning (May 4, 2025), a tragic accident happened at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) when an SUV suddenly sped forward and struck several people near the terminal entrance.
The driver, Leo Gonzales, claimed the incident was not intentional and explained what caused the unfortunate event.

According to Gonzales, he panicked when another vehicle suddenly appeared in front of him. In his confusion, he pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake. His mistake caused the SUV to shoot forward uncontrollably, breaking through the barriers and hitting several people on the walkway.
Two people died on the spot, including a young child who was only five years old. Emergency teams had to use heavy equipment to lift the vehicle and rescue a victim pinned underneath.

New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC) President Ramon Ang promised to cover all medical expenses for the injured and give financial support to the families of those who lost their lives. His quick offer of help brought some relief during a very difficult time.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) quickly acted by placing the driver under a 90-day preventive suspension. It means he is not allowed to drive while the investigation is ongoing.
Authorities are also preparing legal charges against Gonzales, as they look further into what happened and who should be held responsible.
The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the need for drivers to remain calm and alert, especially in crowded areas like airports. Many are now calling for tighter safety checks and stricter driving guidelines to prevent similar incidents in the future.
