Authorities reveal findings after discovering the dead bodies of Gene Hackman and his wife in their home.
Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, were found dead on Wednesday afternoon in their home.
Legendary Hollywood actor Gene Hackman was found dead by the authorities in his Santa Fe, New Mexico home with his wife, classical pianist Betsy Arakawa, and their dog alongside him. The two-time Oscar winner was 95, and his wife was 63.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed this heartbreaking news on Wednesday afternoon.
“Foul play is not suspected as a factor in those deaths at this time, however exact cause of death has not been determined,” the sheriff’s office said and added, “This is an active and ongoing investigation.”
The Sheriff did not further disclose the cause of death or say when the couple might have died. Hackman is survived by three children, Christopher, Elizabeth Jean, and Leslie Anne. They are his children with his late ex-wife, Faye Maltese, who died in 2017.
Hackman’s career spanned 40 decades, which included prolific performances in The French Connection, Superman, and The Royal Tenenbaums. He joined the Marines in the late 1940s, and it was in the 1950s when he studied acting. It was in 2004 when he retired.
While in the Marines for four and a half years, he served in China, Japan, and Hawaii. Later on, he pursued a degree in journalism and television production at the University of Illinois.
The French Connection was the film that got him the Best Actor Oscar and cemented his reputation in the entertainment industry as a leading man.
Hackman and Arakawa’s Relationship
They began dating in the mid-1980s after the actor got separated from his first wife, Faye Maltese. Arakawa was a classical pianist, and they met when she was working part-time in a California fitness center.
In 1990, they moved to their house in New Mexico, the same house where they were discovered dead. Hackman and Arakawa got married in 1991. They were married for more than 30 years.
