Female Restaurant Worker Lost her Phone and Nearly P29K to Thief
A restaurant worker in Makati City, had her cellphone stolen, and P29,000 was taken from her bank account while she was at work.
Last Saturday morning (June 15, 2024), a female restaurant staff in Barangay San Antonio, Makati City lost her mobile phone at work. The suspect also managed to access her bank account and transfer nearly P29,000 from it.
CCTV footage shows an employee counting money at the counter with her phone beside her. A man in black clothing then enters, pretending to solicit something. He places a paper on the counter near the phone.
When the staff decline his solicitation letter, he removes the paper and rushes out – but not before taking the phone.
The victim chased after the suspect, who quickly fled on a motorcycle. The entire theft took just over a minute. The stolen phone was worth around P80,000.
About an hour later, the victim noticed nearly P29,000 had been transferred out of one of her bank accounts linked to the stolen phone. The suspect was able to access her accounts which had security features like facial recognition and passcodes.
The culprit also tried accessing her social media and email linked to the phone’s SIM card.
“Ang wino-worry ko noon, after a few hours, napalitan na agad ang password ng GMail ko then nagkaroon ng transaction sa bank account ko na nakapag-transfer ng pera… Tinag ko as lost ang phone ko pero napatay na niya agad, hindi siya (data) agad ma-delete,”the 35-year-old victim said.
Using GPS tracking, the victim located the phone at a mall – and discovered she wasn’t the only victim of this suspect’s scheme.
“Naka-ano siya doon, blacklisted na. Naka-watch list. Nasa watch list na siya. Kasi second victim ako from Makati na ganoon din ang nangyari. Noong pinakita ang picture sa akin, na-identify na siya yun, blonde lang ang color ng hair,” she added.
While not expecting to get her phone back, the victim hopes no other personal information gets compromised.
The Makati police are tracking the suspect, who PMaj. Welken Noblejas thinks is part of a “salisi gang” using solicitation as a cover to steal from establishments. Noblejas reminds the public to guard their belongings.
