Elderly Artist Touches Many Hearts for Selling Charcoal Portraits to Support Family
An elderly artist goes viral and touches the heart of the online community for selling his charcoal portraits to support his family.
Zoe Phil Cagas, a Facebook user, shared photos of an elderly artist selling his own artwork to earn money and support the financial needs of his family. The post quickly circulated online and elicited comments from the netizens.
Zoe’s story began when she encountered the 77-year-old artist, Alfredo Abierra, on the Gaisano-Ayala Centrio overpass in Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental. Alfredo Abierra, affectionately known as Manong Alfredo, only relies on his artistic talents to support his family.
His primary source of income is from charcoal portraits. However, this small means of livelihood meets their basic necessities, and Manong Alfredo frequently goes for days without customers seeking his artistry.
Cagas’s heart went out to the elderly artist, and she shared her encounter with him on social media. Through her post, she revealed the challenges Manong Alfredo faced, such as not having a mobile phone, which made it difficult for potential clients to reach out to him for commissions.
“Doon ko nalaman na wala po siyang phone. Sometimes 3-5 days walang nagpapa-draw sa kanya. So laking tulong yung pagka-viral ng post,” Cagas said.
Touched by Manong Alfredo’s dedication and determination, numerous netizens extended their support through acts of kindness, including cash donations to help him and his family during difficult times. The 77-year-old artist is making charcoal drawing costing up to P500 each.
Manong Alfredo’s story is proof of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of social media to connect individuals and communities, driving them to rally together to help someone in need.
The concerned netizen’s post serves as a reminder that a simple act of kindness, such as sharing a story, can inspire positive change in the lives of those who may otherwise remain unseen and unheard.
