CAMARINES SUR – A 2-year-old boy tragically lost his life after swallowing a whole rambutan fruit, including its seed.

A toddler in Del Gallego, Camarines Sur tragically lost his life after swallowing a whole rambutan fruit. The kid had removed the fruit’s skin but swallowed the entire rambutan without realizing the potential danger.

Rambutan, a popular tropical fruit, scientifically known as Nephelium lappaceum, belongs to the Sapindaceae family, which also includes lychee and longan.

The rambutan’s outer shell is covered in soft, hair-like spines that are typically green when young and turn into a vibrant red or yellow-orange as the fruit ripens. These spines are not just for show; they serve as a natural defense mechanism against pests and predators.

It contains a chemical called saponin within its seeds, which can be extremely toxic when consumed in large quantities. Some of the symptoms of saponin poisoning, which can occur if the seed is swallowed whole, include diarrhea, convulsions, and loss of consciousness.

While rambutan flesh itself is generally safe to eat, it is crucial to remove the seeds and skin before consumption to avoid any potential health risks.

The incident serves as a reminder to parents to become more vigilant when it comes to the safety of young children, especially around potentially hazardous foods. Doctors and experts consistently advise parents and guardians to take extra precautions to prevent choking hazards.

Parents are encouraged to supervise their children during mealtime and educate them about the potential dangers associated with certain foods.
