The tough-talking mayor of Davao City, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte expressed his empathy for Vice President Jejomar Binay and his family because the family of VP Binay will have to face the court if he loses his bid for the country’s highest position. Mayor Duterte stated that he understands the situations and pressure on VP Binay to win the May 9 election.
In an interview with CNN Philippines, Mayor Duterte stated that “if VP Binay doesn’t win the election, he and many members of his family will go to jail.”
During previous interviews with the media, the 71-year-old Mayor Rodrigo Duterte described the Binay’s as a “basketball team” – referring to the allegations of corruption hurled against VP Binay’s son former Makati Mayor Junjun Binay and VP Binay’s wife, Dr. Elenita Binay, who also served as mayor of the city of Makati.
Former Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay is facing graft and criminal charges before the Sandiganbayan in relation to the overpriced Makati parking building, while his mother, Elenita, is facing charges for the alleged anomalous purchase of hospital equipment amounting to millions of pesos.
Aside from the cases faced by the Binay Family, Mayor Duterte has always taken swipes Binay’s alleged ill-gotten wealth, saying the Vice President is the only candidate who does not have the moral ascendancy to talk about ending corruption.
“He cannot talk about fighting corruption because he has baggage,” Duterte said. Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is also considered as the msot popular candidate on social media and one of his platform of government is the fight against corruption aside from ending crimes and proliferation of any other illegal activities in the country.
