Turkey Police Arrested 50 LGBTQ Members After Staging Istanbul Pride March
At least 50 members of the LGBTQ community in Turkey were arrested by the authorities after staging a pride march.
Around 50 people were detained by Turkish police during the annual Pride march in Istanbul. It should be noted that the government of President Tayyip Erdogan and his Islamist-rooted AK Party has tightened LGBTQ+ freedom in the country.
Along with the Pride month gathering, police in riot gear barred marchers on Istiklal Avenue, a popular location for Pride marches in recent years, as well as in central Taksim Square. Based on the report, other surrounding roads were also closed, and public transportation in the region was suspended.
As a result, hundreds of people carrying rainbow and transgender flags gathered at Mistik Park in Sisli district. Despite this, police arrested roughly 50 people following the march, according to organizers.
According to the Amnesty International – Turkey office, one person was injured in the head while being detained by police. Organizers then revealed that Erdogan is really targeting the LGBTQ+ community.
Members do not support this hate and denial stance, according to a statement issued by Istanbul LGBTI+ Pride Week. According to the research, homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey.
