One of the most popular Vice Presidential candidate, Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano urged the national government to allot P1 Billion each of the 18 regions of the Philippines to develop and promote their local economies. The proposal was aired by Sen. Cayetano after APEC leaders discuss ways to strengthen micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to the 45-year-old Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano the Philippine MSMEs generated 64.7 percent or 4,930,851 jobs in 2012, compared to the 2,658 jobs by large enterprises. Although MSMEs had such a huge contribution to the Philippine economy, the senator noted that the national government does not give enough funds for them.
The MSMEs has a national budget allocation of P1.64 Billion last 2014 but such amount could not be felt by most Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises across the country.
Sen. Alan Cayetano, one of politicians who believes that Mayor Duterte will decided to run for President, noted that he would file a bill, which seeks to grant P90-billion fund for five years to promote the development of local enterprises and businesses in the regions through proper government support and better access to low-interest loans.
The senator who is known for his advocacy for a “one-town, one product” policy said that the government needs to establish measures for MSMEs’ growth like shared service facilities, product research and development, and proper production, packaging, marketing, and trade of products.
