Echoes in the Envelope (Part 5): The Ghost From The Letter
Echoes in the Envelope (Part 5) – For two whole months, Kevin couldn’t get Iris out of his head. Her words, her smile, and the sudden warmth she brought into his night replayed in his mind like a favorite melody.
He had immediately found the book she recommended on the third shelf, Love After Heartbreak, and read every single page. Through its chapters, Kevin found a completely new perspective when it came to love. He realized that a closed door didn’t mean his ability to love was gone; it just meant he had been pouring his heart into the wrong vessel.
Deep down, he harbored a quiet, persistent hope that he would accidentally bump into her again. That hope became his daily routine. Every single time he had a free hour between classes, Kevin would return to the coffee shop, ordering his usual brew, sitting near the window, and keeping his eyes on the entrance.

One afternoon, Kevin pushed open the glass door, the familiar bell chiming overhead. He automatically glances toward his favorite window spotโthe exact place where his life-changing encounter with Iris had happened. To his surprise, a woman is already sitting there, her back partially turned to him.
Sighing quietly, Kevin prepares himself to choose another seat across the room. He takes two steps away when a voice cuts through the soft piano music.
“Kevin!”
Kevin freezes. His heart jumps with a massive surge of excitement. He spins around and sees Iris sitting at the table. She is looking at him with a bright, radiant expression, waving at him enthusiastically.
“Hey! Come over here, sit with me!” Iris calls out, gesturing to the empty chair across from her.
Kevin walks over, his legs feeling a bit like jelly, and slides into the seat. “Iris! Wow, hi. I… I didn’t expect to see you here today.”
Iris chuckles, taking a sip from her mug. “Really? Because from what I hear, you’re always here.”
Kevin blinks, caught off guard. “Wait, what do you mean?”
Iris rests her chin on her hand, a deeply playful, mischievous glint in her eyes. “Well, it turns out the head barista who works the morning shift is one of my closest friends from high school. And she told me that a guy named Kevin has been coming in here practically every day, at all possible times, ordering coffee and looking longingly at the door.”
Iris leans in slightly, a teasing smile playing on her lips. “She asked me, ‘Hey Iris, did you cast a spell on that quiet writer guy?’ So, tell me, Kevin… were you trying to find a new book, or were you hoping to find me?”
Kevin’s face instantly turns a bright, burning crimson. He pulls his collar nervously, completely blushing as he realizes he had been entirely too obvious about wanting to see Iris again.
“I… uh…” Kevin stammers, his writer’s eloquence failing him completely under her gaze. “I read the book you recommended. It really helped me. And yeah… maybe I was hoping I’d run into the person who gave it to me.”
Irisโs playful teasing softens into a deeply sweet, genuine smile. “I’m glad you stayed, Kevin. I was hoping I’d see you too.”
From that second encounter onward, a beautiful rhythm develops between them. What started as brief cafe run-ins transforms into frequent, long conversations over the phone. Night after night, they find themselves talking for hoursโdiving deep into the books they love, sharing the specific stories that have inspired them over the years, and debating their favorite coffee blends. They talk about the pressures of school, their future dreams, and sometimes just completely mundane things, finding a rare and effortless comfort in each other’s voices.
Sometimes, if Irisโs demanding university schedule allows, she goes out of her way to travel to the cafe. Her campus is a full half-hour away from the coffee shop, but she gladly makes the trip just to see him. Slowly, the quiet window corner grows into their personal sanctuaryโa peaceful escape away from their endless schoolwork and heavy responsibilities.

As the weeks fly by, Kevin realizes the knot of past heartbreak in his chest has completely dissolved, replaced entirely by a deep affection for Iris. True to his hopeless romantic soul, he decides it is finally time to take their relationship to the next level. He wants to ask Iris if it is okay to officially court her.
One sunny afternoon after school, Kevin prepares everything meticulously. He picks out a beautiful, vibrant bouquet of flowers. Walking into their sanctuary cafe, his heart beats erratically, but this time, it is fueled by anticipation rather than fear.
Iris is already waiting at their usual table. When she sees him approaching with the flowers, her eyes widen slightly in surprise. Kevin takes a deep breath, steps up, and presents the bouquet, looking directly into her eyes as he delivers his heartfelt speech.
“Iris,” Kevin says, his voice steadying as his writer’s confidence returns. “When I lost my way, your note gave me hope. But over these past few months, my life has found a completely new color because of you. I’ve never met anyone who understands my soul the way you do. I am so incredibly happy to have met you, and… I want to do this right. I want to ask if it’s okay for me to officially court you?”
Iris stares at the bouquet, her cheeks flushing a delicate pink. A beautiful, shy smile takes over her face. She takes the flowers, cradling them gently, and looks up at him, nodding her head softly.
“Yes, Kevin,” Iris whispers, her eyes shining with genuine affection. “I would be more than happy to entertain you as my suitor.”
That very same evening, the living room is filled with warmth as Kevin happily tells his grandparents that Iris has allowed him to court her. Corazon and Estacio radiate pure joy, their faces lighting up with proud smiles.
“We are so happy for you, Kevin,” Corazon says, squeezing his hand. “Honestly, we are just so glad you didn’t give up on love after the heartbreak you encountered. Your heart is too beautiful to stay closed forever.”
Estacio smiles, leaning back with a look of lifetime wisdom. “You see, my boy, there is a wonderful lesson in all of this. Sometimes the things or the people we desperately want to keep in our lives are simply not meant to be there. And that’s okay, because we are ultimately destined for somethingโor someoneโelse. Iris found your letter for a reason.”

Corazon nods in absolute agreement. “Speaking of Iris, you must invite her over for the weekend! It is my birthday, and we are hosting a small family gathering with your aunts and uncles. Since your parents are still working abroad, itโs the perfect time for everyone to meet her.”
The next day, Kevin nervously asks Iris about his grandmother’s invitation. To his complete delight, Iris gladly accepts, smiling at how sweet it was for his family to include her.
When the weekend arrives, the family home is bustling with laughter and the rich aroma of home-cooked food. Corazon and Estacio warmly welcome Iris at the door, instantly putting her at ease with their gentle kindness. Iris fits right into the family circle, and Kevin stands by her side, a proud, unstoppable smile resting on his face.
But suddenly, the front door clicks open again. Kevin’s female cousin, Diane, walks into the living room, calling out a cheerful greeting.
“Hey everyone! Sorry I’m late!” Diane shouts, stepping aside to let the person behind her enter. “I brought a guest. Look who I reconnected with!”
Kevin turns around, and the vibrant smile on his face fades instantly into pure shock. Standing right next to Diane is a completely familiar faceโit is Penelope.
As it turns out, Penelope and Diane had been close friends back in high school and had recently reconnected over social media. Because they lived in entirely different circles now, Diane had absolutely no idea about Kevin and Penelope’s painful past relationship.
The room suddenly feels suffocatingly quiet to Kevin. A wave of unexplainable, complex emotions rushes through his chest, but he desperately tries to hide it, forcing his face into a rigid, neutral mask.
“Kevin, look!” Diane says innocently, completely unaware of the tension. “You remember Penelope from your university, right? Penelope, this is my cousin, Kevin!”
Penelope looks at Kevin, her usual vibrant confidence faltering for a split second as her eyes shift from him to Iris, who is standing close to his side.
Iris looks at Kevin’s stiff posture, his clenched jaw, and the sudden coldness in his eyes. In a single second, the pieces click perfectly into place. This is Penelope. The girl from the letter. Iris looks at Kevin with a calm, deeply knowing look, letting him know silently that she is right there with him.
Kevin clears his throat, offering an incredibly dry, distant greeting. “Hi.”
The awkwardness in the air is palpable. Across the room, Corazonโs sharp eyes track the entire interaction. Recognizing Penelope’s name and seeing her grandson’s sudden distress, the wise grandmother steps in immediately. She walks over with a bright, commanding smile, placing herself smoothly between the youth.
“Diane, Penelope! I am so glad you could make it,” Corazon says warmly, gently guiding the two girls away by their elbows toward the dining room. “Come along, letโs get you both over to the table to get some food before it gets cold.”
As his grandmother skillfully defuses the situation, Kevin lets out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding, tightly gripping Irisโs hand under the table. _
