Sara Duterte Spends More Than Three Hours Visiting High-Profile Detainees
SARA DUTERTE – A confirmed visit by Vice President Sara Duterte to the Quezon City Jail has sparked curiosity after she met with Senator Rodante Marcoleta, Senator Jinggoy Estrada, and former Congressman Mike Defensor.
Vice President Sara Duterte paid a visit to detained politicians Senator Rodante Marcoleta, Senator Jinggoy Estrada, and former Anakalusugan Party-list Representative Mike Defensor at the Quezon City Jail on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, according to the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
The visit was confirmed by BJMP officials a day after reports surfaced regarding the Vice President’s appearance at the detention facility, drawing public attention due to the high-profile cases involving the three political figures.
The visit came just weeks after the Office of the Vice President (OVP) issued an official statement on July 21 regarding Duterte’s overseas trip to Qatar, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands. According to the OVP, the Vice President traveled to attend an event with the Filipino community (FilCom) in the United Kingdom and later proceeded to the Netherlands as part of efforts to strengthen the Philippines’ interests abroad.
On Tuesday, however, news quickly spread that Duterte had visited Marcoleta, Estrada, and Defensor at the Quezon City Jail, prompting widespread discussion.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada is currently facing a non-bailable plunder case along with graft complaints linked to the alleged ₱573 million in kickbacks from controversial flood control projects under the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Meanwhile, Senator Rodante Marcoleta and former Congressman Mike Defensor are facing charges of non-bailable plunder, indirect bribery, and three counts of violating Presidential Decree No. 46, which prohibits government officials from accepting or giving gifts to private individuals.
BJMP spokesperson JSupt. Jayrex Bustinera officially confirmed the Vice President’s visit to members of the media on Wednesday, August 5. He disclosed that Duterte arrived at the jail shortly after noon and stayed for more than three hours.
“She arrived at around 12:00 noon and left at approximately 3:20 p.m. During her visit, she met with Senator Rodante Dizon Marcoleta, Senator Jose Pimentel Ejercito Jr., known as Jinggoy E. Estrada, and former Congressman Michael Tan Defensor,” said Bustinera.
The BJMP did not disclose additional details regarding the purpose of the meeting or the topics discussed during the visit.
As of this writing, Vice President Sara Duterte has yet to release any statement or official explanation regarding her visit to the three detained political figures. The Office of the Vice President has also remained silent on the matter, leaving questions about the purpose of the meeting unanswered. The visit continues to draw public interest as the legal proceedings against Marcoleta, Estrada, and Defensor move forward.
