Some keys don’t open doors. They unlock the past.
Mara barely slept.
Ethan’s final words echoed in her mind.
“The key isn’t opening a door… it’s opening the truth.”
She turned the brass key over in her hands.
The engraving had changed again.
The words FIND THE LOCK had disappeared.
Now only one number remained.
17
She had seen that number before.
The train ticket.
The old photograph.
The date printed beneath the picture.
October 17, 1989.
It couldn’t be a coincidence.
The next morning, Mara returned to the abandoned railway station outside Ashcroft.
Although every map insisted the station didn’t exist, she found it exactly where the mysterious coordinates had led her.
The platform was silent.
Rust covered the tracks.
Broken windows rattled in the wind.
Inside the deserted waiting room stood a row of old metal lockers.
Most were rusted shut.
One remained untouched.
Locker 17.
Her heart pounded.
She slid the brass key into the lock.
It fit perfectly.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then a loud click echoed through the empty station.
The locker door slowly opened.
Inside wasn’t money.
Or weapons.
Or documents.
Inside sat a dusty cassette recorder.
Beside it rested a single cassette tape sealed inside a faded plastic case.
Across the label, written in black marker, were nine chilling words.
IF I’M DEAD… DON’T TRUST ANYONE.
Mara felt her pulse quicken.
The handwriting was Ethan’s.
Ethan’s Voice
The recorder still contained old batteries.
She hesitated only for a moment before pressing PLAY.
Static filled the room.
Then…
His voice.
Weak.
Tired.
Unmistakably Ethan.
“Mara…”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“If you’re hearing this… then something went wrong.”
The tape hissed.
“You can’t believe anyone anymore. Not the police. Not the witnesses. Not even your own memories.”
Mara gripped the recorder tighter.
“They’ll tell you Ashcroft never existed.”
“They’re lying.”
A loud metallic sound echoed somewhere outside the station.
Mara stopped the tape.
Silence.
Only the wind.
She looked through the broken windows.
No one.
She pressed PLAY again.
“If they’ve already found the key…”
The recording crackled violently.
“Then they’ve already found—”
The tape abruptly stopped.
The recorder clicked.
The batteries were still working.
The cassette had simply reached its end.
Frustrated, Mara removed the tape from the recorder.
Something felt wrong.
The cassette case was heavier than it should have been.
She examined it more closely.
Hidden beneath the plastic label was another folded piece of paper.
Only three handwritten words appeared.
TURN IT OVER.
Confused, Mara flipped the cassette over.
Etched into the back casing was a tiny symbol she had never noticed before.
A circle.
Crossed by three vertical lines.
The exact same symbol was carved into the brass key.
At that moment…
The cassette recorder turned itself on.
No one had touched it.
Static filled the station once more.
Then a calm voice—not Ethan’s—spoke through the speaker.
“Thank you for finding it.”
Mara froze.
“We’ve been waiting for you.”
The tape wasn’t playing anymore.
Someone…
Was speaking to her.
To Be Continued…
