Bus Conductor Pretends as Robbery Victim to Hide Missing Remittance
A bus conductor was arrested after faking a robbery to hide the missing remittance he spent on online gambling.
A 48-year-old bus conductor was arrested after allegedly pretending to be a robbery victim to hide the loss of P17,000 in company funds that he reportedly spent on online gambling.
According to police, the incident came to light in the early hours of Monday when the conductor approached officers from the Philippine National Police’s Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit (TMRU) along EDSA Balintawak in Barangay Apolonio Samson, Quezon City.
He asked for help and claimed that he had been robbed by individuals who even introduced themselves as police officers.
The report immediately caught the attention of authorities, prompting an investigation. Police officers reviewed CCTV footage from the area where the supposed robbery allegedly took place.
However, after carefully checking the recordings, investigators found no evidence that a robbery had happened.
As the investigation continued, representatives and fellow drivers from the bus company arrived at the police station. Faced with the findings, the conductor eventually admitted that the robbery’s story was not true.
Authorities learned that the missing P17,000 was part of the bus company’s remittance. The suspect later confessed that he had been involved in online gambling for about four months.
According to his admission, he used the company’s money in an attempt to recover previous gambling losses. Instead of winning back the funds, he lost the money and later came up with the robbery story to cover up what happened.
Police also discovered that the conductor had only been working for the bus company for about five months. Further checks into his records revealed that he had previously been linked to an illegal drug-related case in 2022.
The suspect is now under police custody and is facing complaints about Qualified Theft and Unjust Vexation. Authorities continue to remind the public about the dangers of gambling addiction, which can lead to poor decisions and serious legal consequences.
