Aklan Maritime Police Station Arrest 2 Men for Illegal Fishing in New Washington
Two men were arrested after they were allegedly caught conducting illegal fishing activities in the waters of New Washington.
On Tuesday (May 26, 2026), the Aklan Maritime Police Station together with the Dumaguit Maritime Law Enforcement Team and Naval Force Central carried out the operation. Authorities said the suspects were caught in the act while using fishing nets and equipment that reportedly had no proper permit.
According to authorities, the operation was part of their ongoing efforts to protect marine resources and prevent illegal fishing activities in coastal areas. The suspects were accused of violating Section 86 of Republic Act 10654, a law that strengthens regulations against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing in the country.
During the operation, law enforcers confiscated a fishing boat, several fishing tools, and different kinds of fish believed to have been illegally caught. The total estimated value of the seized items reportedly reached more than P302,000.
Photos from the operation also showed the recovered fish and fishing equipment being secured by authorities as evidence. The confiscated items were immediately taken into custody to support the investigation and filing of possible charges against the suspects.
The two men were also brought to the police station for proper documentation and further investigation. Authorities are now preparing the necessary legal procedures related to the case.
Illegal fishing remains one of the major concerns in many coastal communities because it affects marine life and the livelihood of legal fishermen. Authorities continue to remind fishermen to follow proper fishing regulations and secure the necessary permits before conducting activities at sea.
