Amid the Legal Proceedings, House Allegedly Secured Needed Vote for VP Sara Duterte’s Impeachment

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES – Manila Representative Joel Chua claimed that the chamber allegedly has enough numbers now to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte.

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte is invited to the March 25 “mini-trial” of the impeachment complaint filed against her before the lower chamber. An invitation was sent to Duterte as well as the complainants behind the impeachment raps.

Two (2) impeachment complaints against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte were found by the House Committee on Justice as sufficient in grounds after it passed the scrutiny of its form and substance. Here are some of the accusations against the Vice President in the impeachment raps:

  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes in amassing and converting the amount over PHP 500 million confidential funds (CF) allocated to the Office of the Vice President from 2022 to 2023
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes in amassing and converting the amount of not less than PHP 112.5 million of confidential funds allocated to the Department of Education (DepEd) for the year 2023
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust by corrupting and bribing officials of the DepEd
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, and other high crimes in contracting to murder or assassinate the president, the first lady, and the former speaker of the House
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in amassing unexplained wealth and failing to disclose all her properties and interests in properties in her SALN
  • Alleged culpable violation of the Constitution and betrayal of public trust in committing acts of political destabilization and the high crimes of sedition and insurrection

The House had already warned Vice Pres. Sara Duterte that skipping the “mini-trial” of the impeachment complaints against her could speed up the transmission of the impeachment raps to the Senate. The Justice panel is authorized to continue with the legal proceedings even amid the Congressional recess.

The Congress is on recess from March 21 to May 3. Recently, Manila Rep. Joel Chua claimed that the House has allegedly secured the votes needed to impeach Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.

Based on a report on PhilStar, Manila Rep. Joel Chua who is the chairman of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability claimed that the recent voting results on the impeachment case against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte allegedly shows that there is enough numbers to impeach Duterte.

“With the voting that happened last time, 54 to 1 and the overwhelming votes last Wednesday declaring that the 3rd and 4th impeachment complaints sufficient in ground, malinaw na kayang maabot ang dapat na boto papuntang Senado,” the solon said.

Furthermore, based on the report, Manila Rep. Joel Chua stressed that the moves of the House of Representatives is allegedly not political but supposedly due to the obedience of the members under the Constitution. He denied the allegation that the chamber is supposedly speeding up the process.

Moreover, the solon also claimed that the hearing of the impeachment complaints against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte may allegedly be aired live.
