Boracay Hero Lifeguard Dies in Deadly Rescue Attempt
BORACAY – Rex Pablo Aguirre, a trained lifeguard, lost his life trying to pull a tourist to safety from the powerful currents.
A tragic incident unfolded at a beach resort in Boracay Island, Aklan, as a lifeguard lost his life while attempting to save a tourist from drowning.
The lifeguard, identified as Rex Pablo Aguirre, rushed into the water to rescue a Russian national who had been swept toward the deeper part of the sea. Despite his heroic efforts, Aguirre drowned, and the Russian tourist he tried to save also later succumbed.
According to Barangay Captain Hector Casidsid of Barangay Yapak, Malay, Aklan, the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. when the foreign visitor called for help after being carried away by the current. Aguirre immediately dived in to respond to the distress call, demonstrating courage and quick action, but tragically, he was unable to survive. His body was recovered nearly 11 hours later, at approximately 10:00 p.m.
Casidsid confirmed that Aguirre had undergone proper lifeguard training. However, at the time of the rescue, he was not wearing a life jacket. “Kumpleto naman ang kanilang gamit, hindi lang naisuot (ang) lifejacket. Naka-training naman sila sa rescue. Nakita niya ang taong humihingi ng tulong. Ni-rescue rin ng mga Coast Guard,” Casidsid explained.
The Philippine Coast Guard in Malay and the Philippine National Police have not yet released official statements regarding the incident.
Authorities continue to urge swimmers and beachgoers to exercise caution while in the water and to strictly follow safety guidelines to prevent similar tragedies. The event serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by strong currents, even for trained personnel.
Aguirre’s sacrifice highlights the bravery and dedication of lifeguards who put their lives on the line to protect others. Locals and tourists alike have expressed their condolences for the families of both the lifeguard and the Russian national.
While Boracay remains one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations, this heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness in aquatic activities. Safety equipment and proper procedures can make the difference between life and death, and authorities continue to emphasize these measures to prevent future incidents.
