FDA Urged to Act on Reported Toxin in Nestlé Baby Formula

Health Secretary Urges FDA to Act on Reported Toxin in Nestlé Baby Formula Products

The Food and Drug Administration is being urged to immediately act on reported toxin in Nestlé baby formula products.

Former Health Secretary and now Iloilo Representative Janette Garin has called on the Food and Drug Administration to quickly act on reports that some Nestlé baby formula products may contain a harmful substance.

The concern came after Nestlé announced a global recall of selected baby formula products. The recall was described as a precautionary step after reports that some batches might contain a toxin that could cause food poisoning.

Among the products mentioned were SMA infant formula and follow-on formula. These products may possibly contain cereulide, a toxin that can lead to symptoms such as dizziness and vomiting, especially in young children who consume the milk.

Although there have been no reported cases of illness so far, the company decided to recall the affected products worldwide to prevent any possible harm. The products were reportedly distributed in different countries, raising concern among parents.

Garin explained that product recalls are often done as a safety measure. She stressed that it is important for the FDA to act right away if any of the affected products have entered the Philippine market. Immediate action, she said, would help protect children and reassure families.

At the same time, she advised parents not to panic if their children have already consumed the formula and have not experienced any symptoms. She explained that if side effects occur, they usually appear quickly.

If a child shows signs like vomiting or feeling unwell, parents are encouraged to seek medical advice as soon as possible.

Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of children and to give clear guidance to the public.
