Stage 4 Cancer Patient Dies After Ambulance Was Stopped on EDSA Busway
A stage 4 cancer patient passed away on the same day the ambulance carrying the patient was stopped along the EDSA Busway.
On Monday (February 16, 2026), the ambulance was flagged down for passing through the restricted lane. The vehicle was stopped by personnel from the Special Action and Intelligence Committee for Transportation.
The driver explained that they were on the way to a scheduled medical check-up. However, the explanation was reportedly not accepted at that time.

The patient’s child later faced the media and became emotional while sharing what happened. According to the family, the patient became stressed because of the incident. Sadly, the patient passed away later that day.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, also known as Secretary Banoy Lopez in some reports, extended his sympathy to the grieving family. He clarified that under existing rules, on-duty ambulances are allowed to use the EDSA Busway.
Bautista said the reasoning that only patients in critical condition can pass through the busway does not match the current guidelines.
Following the incident, the head of the Special Operations Group of the committee, Rayson dela Torre, was ordered to explain within three days. He has also been relieved from his assignment while the matter is being reviewed.
The Department of Transportation also announced that a re-orientation will be conducted for personnel assigned along the busway to ensure that policies are clearly understood and properly followed.
As the investigation continues, many are hoping that clearer rules and better coordination will prevent similar situations in the future, especially when it involves patients in need of urgent medical care.
