Nearly 1,000 Filipinos Called Mental Health Hotlines, DOH Reveals

DOH Logs Alarming Surge in Mental Health Calls During Holidays

MENTAL HEALTH – While the holidays are often seen as a time of joy and celebration, new data from the Department of Health reveals a more troubling reality for many Filipinos.

The Department of Health (DOH) has reported a significant number of calls to its Mental Health Hotline during the recent holiday period, underscoring the emotional challenges faced by many Filipinos at the end of the year.

In a social media post released on Saturday, the DOH revealed that nearly 1,000 individuals sought help through the hotline between December 21, 2025, and January 2, 2026. Data from the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) showed that a total of 961 callers reached out during this timeframe, reflecting an increased demand for mental health support during the holidays.

Health officials noted that the highest number of calls was recorded on December 30, 2025. The most frequently reported concerns revolved around relationship or love life problems, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. According to the DOH, these issues often intensify during the holiday season, a period that can bring added emotional pressure due to family expectations, social obligations, financial stress, or feelings of loneliness.

The department emphasized that while the holidays are typically associated with celebration and togetherness, they can also trigger emotional distress for some individuals. The rise in hotline calls, health authorities said, highlights the importance of recognizing the psychological and emotional strain that may surface during this time.

To address these concerns, the DOH said it will continue monitoring mental health cases until January 5 as part of its post-holiday surveillance efforts. This initiative aims to ensure that emerging mental health issues are identified early and responded to promptly.

The agency also reassured the public that mental health hotlines remain fully operational and accessible. It encouraged individuals experiencing emotional difficulties, stress, or psychological distress to seek professional help without hesitation.

Furthermore, the DOH reiterated its call for greater public awareness of mental health concerns. It urged Filipinos to check on one another, listen with empathy, and remind those who are struggling that they are not alone. The department stressed that reaching out for help is a sign of strength and that support is readily available for those who need it.

As the country transitions into the new year, health officials continue to emphasize the importance of prioritizing mental well-being alongside physical health, especially during emotionally demanding periods.
