Jefferson “Jeff” Utanes, widely known among fans as the “Goku ng Pinas,” has passed away at the age of 46, leaving the local anime and dubbing community in mourning. Utanes was best remembered as the Filipino voice behind Son Goku, the beloved protagonist of the iconic anime series “Dragon Ball,” a role that earned him admiration from generations of viewers.
News of his passing was shared by his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Teodoro, through a Facebook post that asked for prayers on behalf of the bereaved family. “On behalf of my sister Catherine and her children Jhulianne & Justin, we humbly ask for prayers for the soul of my brother-in-law Jefferson Seril Utanes. May the Lord grant him eternal rest and perpetual light. Amen,” she wrote. The family has yet to disclose the official cause of death, though Utanes had previously revealed on social media that he was battling chronic kidney disease.
Tributes and messages of condolence poured in shortly after the announcement, highlighting the impact Utanes had on both colleagues and fans. Entertainment channel Ani-One Philippines also honored the late voice actor in a heartfelt statement, recognizing his dedication to his craft and the joy he brought to audiences. “Ani-One Philippines stands as one with the anime and dubbing community during this time of loss. We honor Jefferson’s contributions, his love for the craft, and the joy he brought to countless fans through his work,” the channel said.

Beyond voicing Son Goku, Utanes showcased his versatility through numerous memorable roles across various anime titles. He lent his voice to characters such as Doraemon, James from “Pokémon,” Kosei Arima from “Your Lie in April,” Ken Matsuhiro from “Yakitate!!
