Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago has sided with Pinoy Big Brother female housemates amid the issue of lewd jokes of male housemates.
No force eviction, just punishment? The issue of inappropriate jokes came to a head on Tuesday’s episode of “PBB: Celebrity Collab Edition 2.0.” This issue has caught attention online, and some viewers were questioning why the program has not taken any action yet on such concerning matters, especially this one, where teens and some minors are involved.
In a statement, Gabriela Party-list Rep. Sarah Elago expressed dismay over the actions and took the side of the female teen housemates.
Gabriela Women’s Party is urging PBB to conduct gender-sensitivity seminars for the housemates after the female housemates called out the inappropriate jokes and objectifying remarks. According to them, the issue just showed the wider issue of “birong bastos” becoming normal among young people.
“We appreciate how some of the housemates expressed why such comments are hurtful. These conversations, though difficult, are important steps toward building a culture of respect,” she said.
Gabriela is open to providing assistance in case the program needs to integrate stronger gender education components into the show. It matters for the people to see that lewdness has no place in Big Brother’s house.
She also reminded everyone that not all jokes are funny, especially those that objectify others. This incident should accordingly become a learning moment for both the housemates and viewers.
“We encourage PBB’s producers to provide gender-sensitivity seminars for all housemates to deepen their understanding of consent, boundaries, and everyday sexism faced by women,” she added.
Elago stressed that the program should guide discussions to help young viewers understand why objectifying comments about women are harmful.
