Driver Fired After Rescuing Flood Victims in Cebu to Be Honored by DOLE

Driver Gets Fired After Rescuing Flood Victims in Cebu

A wing van driver who was fired after rescuing the flood victims in Cebu is set to received recognition from DOLE.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE Region 7) is set to give a recognition to the driver who lost his job after using his company vehicle to save people swept away by floodwaters in Barangay Cotcot, Liloan, Cebu.

The rescue took place during the onslaught of Tropical Storm Tino, when strong currents trapped several residents.

DOLE will also investigate the decision of the van owner to dismiss the driver, Francis Anthony Narvasa. The agency said there appeared to be no valid reason for removing him from his job, especially after his actions clearly aimed to save lives.

A video of the incident showed how Narvasa and two companions used the wing van to reach six individuals struggling against the strong flood current last November 4. The video quickly spread online and earned admiration from viewers who praised the group’s courage and quick response.

Narvasa later shared that it was a police officer who asked for his help, and he did not hesitate to assist.

However, despite the praise he received, the van owner reportedly disapproved of Narvasa’s actions and terminated him from his job. Many found the decision unfair, especially considering the risk he took to help others.

Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro was among those who admired Narvasa’s bravery. After learning about his dismissal, she instructed the provincial government to hire him as a driver at the Cebu Provincial Capitol, giving him a new opportunity after losing his previous job.

Narvasa’s heroic act will be formally recognized by DOLE Region 7 in December during the agency’s anniversary celebration. Regional Director Atty. Roy Buenafe said they will also look into the legality of his dismissal, which they suspect may not have been reasonable.

DOLE assured that the investigation will include helping Narvasa claim any benefits he is entitled to from his former employer.
