Rodrigo Duterte Interim Release Appeal Rejected By ICC

In an update, the ICC rejected the appeal of ex-president Rodrigo Duterte.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) Appeals Chamber has denied the request for the interim release of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

During a public hearing on Friday, Presiding Judge Luz del Carmen Ibañez Carranza stated that the defense of former President Rodrigo Duterte has “failed to demonstrate an error” in Pre-Trial Chamber I’s determination that he poses a flight risk.

To recall, Duterte was charged with murder ‘as crimes against humanity’ by the ICC. He is under the custody of the ICC in The Hague, Netherlands, since March. The Philippine authorities assisted the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in his arrest in March.

Recently, the Appeals Chamber of the ICC rejected the appeal of the former president for a conditional release. The Pre-Trial Chamber I cited several grounds, ruling that he should remain in detention at The Hague in the Netherlands. This decision was upheld by the Appeals Chamber on Friday.

Duterte did not appear at his hearing, waiving his right to be there.

The Duterte family said they accept the ruling “with peaceful hearts” in a statement. It said, “We will continue to work with the defense team on the case and will keep supporting Former President Rodrigo Duterte with our daily conversations. We thank everyone who prayed with us today.”
