Cebu Residents Sleep Inside Plastic Bags to Protect Themselves From Rain After Quake

Several Cebu residents have no choice but to sleep inside plastic bags to shield their bodies from the rain after the powerful quake.

The struggle of earthquake survivors in Medellin, northern Cebu continues as families spend their nights under the open sky with nothing but plastic bags to cover themselves from the rain.

On Wednesday night, October 1, heavy downpours drenched residents of Barangay Pandan Mahawak who have been staying outdoors since the 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck on September 30, 2025.

Many are afraid to return to their homes, following advice from authorities to remain outside buildings for safety. With limited tents and no proper evacuation area, the community has been forced to endure sleepless nights in uncomfortable and unsafe conditions.

Photos showed families wrapping themselves in large plastic bags to keep dry. Children and the elderly, in particular, were left vulnerable to the cold and damp weather. Parents tried their best to comfort their little ones, but with no roof over their heads, many felt helpless.

Residents are in need of tents that can provide decent shelter from both the heat of the sun during the day and the heavy rains at night. They are also calling for food packs and safe drinking water as their supplies grow short.

The lack of basic necessities has left many worried about health risks, especially with the possibility of colds, fever, and other illnesses spreading in these harsh conditions.

While some local support has reached the area, the number of displaced families remains high, and resources are not enough to meet their needs. Community members continue to hope for more aid to arrive soon so they can rest with dignity and feel secure despite the disaster’s aftermath.

For now, survival means braving the nights with thin plastic bags, waiting for the day they can once again sleep under a safe roof.
