Faithful Dog Passes Away Days After Owner’s Death in Legazpi City
A faithful dog in Legazpi City passed away a few days after his fur parent’s death, showing the deep bond between humans and their pets.
Mitchu, a 7-year-old aspin, was known as a cheerful and loving dog in the Sanchez household. Everything changed after the passing of his fur parent, Tatay Carlos, on August 29 in Barangay Imalnod.
According to Janelyn Sanchez, Mitchu had been quiet and sad since the day he saw his owner for the last time. He reportedly spent several minutes staring at the coffin, as if trying to understand what had happened.
“Papa ‘di ka pa nailibing, ‘yong alaga mong si Mitchu nauna na sa’yo. Sobra n’ya din atang dinamdam pagkawala mo, kaya sumama na siya sa pag alis mo. Nakakalungkot din dahil napakabait din ni Mitchu kagaya mo papa. Ang sigla-sigla n’ya pa lang mula nang dumungaw siya sa’yo, naging matamlay na sya, hanggang sa sumama ka na kay papa,” Sanchez said.
In the days that followed, the once energetic dog lost interest in food and became noticeably weak. On the morning of September 6, 2025, the family found Mitchu lifeless inside their home. The heartbreaking incident left everyone in tears, as it seemed Mitchu had grieved so much that he followed his beloved owner in death.
Out of love and respect, the family placed Mitchu’s remains beneath his owner’s coffin and held a short wake for him before burying him in their backyard. Tatay Carlos will be laid to rest on September 11, 2025.
Veterinarian Dr. Riza Zarte explained that dogs can experience separation anxiety and even depression when they lose their fur parents. It can lead to refusal to eat and a gradual decline in health.
For the Sanchez family, Mitchu’s passing was both painful and meaningful. They believe it was a final act of loyalty, proving that dogs truly are man’s best friend.
