Was it a Lazarus Syndrome? What is this?
LAZARUS SYNDROME – A family in Davao City shared the story of the baby boy who died, lived again, only to die again.
What is a Lazarus Syndrome? According to Healthline, this “refers to your blood circulation returning spontaneously after your heart stops beating, and fails to restart despite cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).” Simply speaking, it is returning to life after it appears that you’ve died.

Recently, a newborn boy from Davao City was initially declared to have died at a hospital. Shortly after, the newborn showed signs of life only to die again.
According to a report, the baby boy was born premature at a private hospital in Calinan District. He was then referred and brought to Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC). Based on the records, the infant died on August 23 and was then brought home to Brgy. Gumalang, Baguio District.
A family member spoke of the matter and blamed the death of the baby on how he was handled in the hospital. According to the family member, they were not blaming the doctors, nurses, or midwives in the hospital, but the one who assisted in the giving birth, who seemed to have shown no concern.
The baby was put in a box when he was sent home, and they found him alive upon opening. The newborn was then brought to SPMC, incubated for two days, only to die again on Monday, August 25.
Dr. Ricardo Audan, medical center chief of SPMC, relayed two theories behind this occurrence. According to him, it could be a rare case of Lazarus syndrome or the box that served as his incubator when he was brought home.
“It could be katong karton nag-serve as incubator murag nag termo regulator sa temperature, kay remember, pagdawat, tugnaw man gani even gibalot namo to siya. So second and baka during the travel, dili stable ang roads, medyo nag-move siguro then nagtermo regulator ang karton, medyo nibalik ang ginhawa,” he said.
Translation: It could be that the box served as an incubator or thermo regulator for the temperature. Remember, when we received the baby, it was already cold even though we had wrapped it. Second, maybe during the travel, since the roads were not even, there was some movement and the box acted as a thermo regulator, which might have helped the baby breathe again.”
This is the first time that this has happened in SPMC.
