Here’s the message Liza Soberano left for her 4-year-old self.
In an Instagram post, actress Liza Soberano revealed the reason why she decided to reveal her traumatic childhood.
Not everyone is blessed with a beautiful and happy childhood. One of those who suffered so much at such a young age was Liza Soberano. In a podcast documentary, she shared one of the most personal and painful stories of her life. She opened up about her childhood, which was shaped by turmoil, mistreatment, and the struggles of being raised in a broken home.
Her parents were struggling to make ends meet and were juggling multiple jobs to raise them. Her mother battled a crystal meth addiction, while her father faced cases involving drug manufacturing, illegal firearms, and a restraining order violation before being deported to the Philippines.
She and her brother have a turbulent upbringing. But things got worse when their mother was taken into custody. It left her and her brother parentless. They moved from one home to another and stayed the longest in Melissa, her mother’s friend. Their stay, however, turned abusive. She revealed that she and her brother were often confined to their room, ridiculed during family gatherings, and treated inhumanely.
She alleged even more disturbing experiences, such as being forced to eat food that made her choke without assistance, being made to clean dog feces with her tongue, and being locked overnight in a cold garage.
In a new Instagram post, she shared a series of photos with messages on them, speaking up on why she opened up about this hard part of her life. In a message to her 4-year-old self, she thanked her for staying determined and strong. She kept on pushing ahead for a beautiful life ahead of her.
As a public figure, it is part of her responsibility to “speak up on the things that matter, from a place that matters.” She then cited data on how “as many as 100,000 Filipino children are exploited,” and thousands more were forced to labor. The data she got also showed that the Philippines has been identified as one of the leading sources of online child exploitation globally.
She wanted to share her story to move even just one little girl to have the courage to speak, and result in one less soul struggling. Soberano urged to fight against those who may try to guilt or shame you from speaking up.
Meanwhile, in the same podcast documentary, Liza also revealed the split with Enrique Gil.
