Tsunami Alert Due To Massive 8.8-Magnitude Earthquake Lifted By PHIVOLCS

The tsunami alert from PHIVOLCS has been lifted.

TSUNAMI ALERT – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) lifted the advisory on Wednesday afternoon.

Tsunami waves crashed at several parts of Russia, Japan, and the United States after a magnitude 8.8 earthquake shook Russia’s eastern Kamchatka Peninsula. The quake struck 136km (84 miles) east of the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, based on the report from the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Tsunami warnings were also issued for Taiwan, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Classes on July 30 were also suspended in various parts of the Philippines due to the tsunami warning.

In the Philippines, an advisory was issued on Wednesday by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raising a tsunami alert in the following areas:

  • Batanes Group of Islands
  • Cagayan
  • Isabela
  • Aurora
  • Quezon
  • Camarines Norte
  • Camarines Sur
  • Albay
  • Sorsogon
  • Catanduanes
  • Northern Samar
  • Eastern Samar
  • Leyte
  • Southern Leyte
  • Dinagat Islands
  • Surigao del Norte
  • Surigao del Sur
  • Davao del Norte
  • Davao Oriental
  • Davao Occidental
  • Davao del Sur
  • Davao de Oro

People were warned to stay away from coastal areas as the massive quake was expected to hit coastal areas in the Philippines, fronting the Pacific Ocean. The public was called on to watch out for unusual waves and stay out of coastal areas “until the cancellation of this advisory.”

On Wednesday afternoon, based on available data, PHIVOLCS said that “no significant sea level disturbances nor destructive tsunami waves have been recorded since the 7:25 a.m. earthquake up until this cancellation.”

Hence, the tsunami alert was lifted, as it added, “With this, any effects due to minor sea level disturbances have largely passed, and therefore, DOST-PHIVOLCS has now cancelled the recommendations issued for this event.”

Apart from class suspensions, the Philippine Ports Authority also cancelled port operations in the affected areas due to the previous tsunami advisory.
