Will Senate Impeachment Court Push Through with VP Sara Duterte’s Impeachment Trial?
SENATE IMPEACHMENT COURT – Senate spokesperson Atty. Regie Tongol spoke on the possible impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
The Senate previously ruled to return the Articles of Impeachment against Vice Pres. Sara Duterte to the House of Representatives. It expressed questions on the constitutionality of the impeachment of the Vice President as well as sought a reconfirmation from the 20th Congress on its willingness to tackle the matter.

Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero clarified that the return of Duterte’s impeachment articles to the House does not mean a dismissal or termination of the impeachment case against the Vice President. Eighteen senator judges voted in favor of the remand of Duterte’s impeachment.

Amid the calls for the Senate impeachment court to rush the start of the trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero stressed that they will not rush the process. He also junked the calls for him to inhibit for being allegedly “biased”.

Sen. Joel Villanueva previously claimed that some senators have agreed to start the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte on August 4. According to him, the week prior to it will be the time given for the Senate and the House of Representatives to settle.
However, ahead of the expected start of the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte, the Supreme Court declared the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte “unconstitutional”. It sparked doubts on whether or not the Senate impeachment court will push through with the trial of the Vice President.

While the House of Representatives plans to file a motion for reconsideration before the SC and some senators disagree with the high court’s decision as per a report on GMA News, the Senate impeachment court will be voting whether or not to push through with the trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. It was confirmed by Senate spokesperson Atty. Regie Tongol.
“Yes, as part of the usual deliberative process of any collegial body based on Senate rules,” the Senate spokesperson told the media.
Atty. Rongol also stressed that the Senate impeachment court is “duty-bound to respect the finality of rulings issued by the High Court”. According to him, the Senate has always performed under the rule of law and the Constitution.
Following the decision of the high court, the Malacañang recently spoke anew on the Supreme Court ruling over the impeachment case of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte.
