Thailand-Cambodia Border Dispute – Cambodia Calls For ‘Immediate Ceasefire’

THAILAND-CAMBODIA BORDER DISPUTE – Amid the border conflict, Cambodia called for an “immediate ceasefire” as thousands were already affected.

Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned on Friday, amid the border conflict against Cambodia, that the tension could escalate into war. Thailand launched airstrikes on Cambodian military targets and accused Cambodia of firing rockets and artillery.

Both countries accused each other of opening fire first. The tension has been boiling for months now. In a previous article, eight districts in Thailand were placed under martial law due to conflict.

Apichart Sapprasert, the commander of the military’s Border Defence Command of Chanthaburi and Trat, shared that martial law was declared in seven districts of Chanthaburi and one district of Trat.

The clash has resulted in over 138,000 people being evacuated from Thailand’s border regions. With the tension still growing, the UN Security Council held a meeting on Friday regarding the crisis. Following the meeting, Cambodia’s UN ambassador Chhea Keo called for a ceasefire, but despite the call, the death toll continued to rise.

“Cambodia asked for an immediate ceasefire – unconditionally – and we also call for the peaceful solution of the dispute,” Cambodia’s UN ambassador Chhea Keo said after the UN meeting.

As of the latest, on the third day of the conflict, the death toll rose to 33, and Phnom Penh of Cambodia, called for an “immediate ceasefire.” The Cambodian defense ministry confirmed that there have been 13 individuals killed already, where eight of them are civilians and five soldiers. Moreover, 71 people were wounded.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, the death toll is now at 20, where 14 are civilians and six are from the military.

On Saturday morning, Cambodia accused Thailand of launching five heavy artillery shells at locations in Pursat Province. They condemned such “unprovoked and premeditated act of aggression.”

As for Thailand, it accused Cambodia of initiating an attack in Trat province.
