President Bongbong Marcos Believes Rains, Floods Are The “New Normal”

This is what President Bongbong Marcos said about the calamities hitting the country in succession.

President Bongbong Marcos has already returned to the Philippines, and this is what he said regarding the series of cyclones that hit the country.

Is the government’s lack of action to address yearly flooding often overlooked, while people’s survival and coping mechanisms are mistaken for resilience? Every rainy season, the country faces the same problem: communities drenched and submerged in floodwaters.

It has become a recurring cycle, met only with the distribution of relief goods. When will this end? Should we settle for the “new normal,” as President Bongbong Marcos said, or should we urge the government to review its flood control projects and find ways to reduce the impact of future storms and floods? There are factors that we cannot control, but how about those we can?

In the past days, a series of cyclones have hit the country and enhanced the southwest monsoon. Emong PH has reached the Typhoon category, causing more rain that contributed to flooding. Several areas in Luzon have been placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4 due to Emong.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. was asked about the country’s situation being hit by cyclones in succession, and acknowledged what he believed was the new normal of the Philippines.

According to the president, the new normal of the country included persistent rains and severe flooding triggered by a series of storms and the southwest monsoon.

“I hate to use the overused phrase, but this is the new normal. This is really our life now, no matter what we do,” Marcos said during a situational briefing. He added that people should not regard the worsening weather conditions as an “extraordinary situation,” as what matters is accordingly adjusting to the realities of climate change.

“We just have to change the way we think. Everything was different from what it was in the last 40 years,” he added, stressing that people must think of plans to adapt as tropical cyclones cannot be prevented.

Crising, Dante, and Emong, combined with the southwest monsoon or Habagat, have battered the country. As of Thursday, 40 cities and municipalities were placed under a state of calamity across the country, and for days, classes have been suspended.
