Maris Racal gave an amazing performance as ‘Sunshine’
Director Antoinette Jadaone revealed why Kapamilya actress Maris Racal was chosen to give life to Sunshine.
Maris has come a long way since she started her showbiz career through the Kapamilya reality show Pinoy Big Brother. She was given various acting projects and even ventured into music.
One of her recent acting projects is the movie Sunshine, which had international screenings. In the movie, she played the role of Sunshine, who is a young gymnast but discovers that she’s pregnant on the same week when she would have her try-outs for the national team.
At that time, she met a mysterious girl, played by Annika Co, who questioned her decision to meet a dealer who sells illegal pills to get rid of the baby.
In a recent interview, based on the article in ABS-CBN, Direk Tonet was asked why Maris Racal was chosen to portray the lead role in this movie. The filmmaker jokingly said, “Bakit si Maris? Kasi wala na talaga akong mahanap. Charing.”
In a serious tone, the director said that Maris had all the physical aspects to give justice to the character of Sunshine. It was a plus point that Maris can dance, which is needed for the graceful movements that she should portray.
“Meron siyang yung physique of a gymnast. So she’s petite, she’s lean, dancer din siya so meron na siyang gracefulness in her movement–– physicality ng isang gymnast na check niya na agad. Siguro yun yung hinahanap ko sa artista na magpla-play ng Sunshine,” the filmmaker explained.
Aside from the physical aspects, Direk Tonet also highlighted the acting talent of Maris. It played a big factor in the decision to choose her as the lead actress. “Yung someone na itre-treat yung scenes based on how she sees it instinctively as an actress,” the director said.
Direk Tonet added that sometimes, if an actor or actress is given a role out of his or her comfort zone, the result will be surprising.
