Outrage in Ormoc, Leyte: 10 Dogs Allegedly Poisoned by Farmer Over Crop Damage
ORMOC – A heartbreaking incident has rocked Barangay Liloan in Ormoc City, where ten dogs were allegedly poisoned by a farmer upset over damaged crops.
A tragic incident involving the deaths of ten dogs has stirred outrage in Barangay Liloan, Ormoc City, Leyte. The animals reportedly died after being poisoned, allegedly by a farmer upset over damage to his cornfield.
According to a report by Ivan Mayrina on GMA 7’s Unang Balita, a resident witnessed the farmer carrying dog food laid out on a banana leaf. The food was later placed in the middle of a cornfield. By the next day, one of the dogs was seen suffering from seizures and died shortly afterward. Nine more dogs were found lifeless near the same area, raising suspicions of deliberate poisoning.

Residents suspect the farmer was enraged due to his crops being damaged—allegedly by the dogs—which may have prompted the malicious act. One resident who lost a pet in the incident is already planning to file a formal complaint.
An animal welfare advocate has also taken legal action against the farmer. Under Philippine law, specifically Republic Act No. 8485 or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 as amended by RA 10631, poisoning or killing animals without justifiable reason is considered a criminal offense. If found guilty, the individual responsible could face imprisonment of six months to two years and/or fines ranging from ₱30,000 to ₱100,000. Penalties may increase if cruelty is involved or if the act is repeated or results in the animal’s death.
If the dogs were owned, the perpetrator could also be liable for additional charges, such as theft or damage to property.
Animal cruelty cases can be reported to barangay officials, local police, the Bureau of Animal Industry, or accredited animal welfare organizations. As investigations continue, concerned citizens and pet owners are urging authorities to ensure accountability and justice for the animals harmed in this incident.
