MMDA Clarifies ‘Not for Hire’ Sign Not Required on Private Vehicles

MMDA Says ‘Not for Hire’ Sign Not Required on Private Vehicles Following Viral Video

MMDA clarified that the “Not for Hire” sign is not required in private vehicles following a viral video online.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has clarified that private vehicles are not required to display a “Not for Hire” sign, putting an end to confusion regarding a viral video.

In the video, an MMDA traffic enforcer was seen stopping a pickup truck driver for not having a “Not for Hire” sign on his vehicle. The incident quickly spread online and garnered various reactions from the public.

Following the buzz, MMDA took to their official Facebook page to explain that private vehicles, those used only for personal transport or for carrying the owner’s own goods are not required to display such signage.

These types of vehicles are not considered public or for-hire transport, so there is no rule demanding them to label their vehicle as “Not for Hire.”

However, if a vehicle is used for public transport or is rented out for a fee, then it must have a proper franchise from the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). Without a franchise, the vehicle is considered colorum or illegally operating as public transport.

Colorum vehicles are subject to strict penalties under the Metro Manila Traffic Code and the Joint Administrative Order (JAO) issued by the LTFRB and the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

The clarification serves as a reminder for both drivers and traffic enforcers. It also shows the importance of clear information and proper communication, especially when it comes to traffic rules and road enforcement.

In a previous report, MMDA records over 700 traffic violations on 3rd day of NCAP
