ALVIN ELCHICO – Veteran anchor Alvin Elchico thought he was just being funny—until Gen Z netizens flooded social media with the real meaning of “bembang.”
Alvin Elchico unexpectedly became a trending topic online following a surprising moment on his DZMM TeleRadyo program, Gising Pilipinas. In one animated segment, Elchico energetically exclaimed, “Gising Pilipinas! Energy, energy! Bembang pa more!”—unaware that the term “bembang” now holds a very different and more provocative meaning for many younger people.
Elchico explained that in his experience, “bembang” means getting reprimanded or scolded, which made sense in the context of their show’s serious commentary. “Ang ibig sabihin sa amin, ‘pag nabembang ako eh, napagalitan ako nang todo,” he shared.
However, soon after the segment aired, Gen Z users quickly pointed out on social media that “bembang” now carries sexual undertones in their generation. What Elchico thought was just a funny and harmless remark suddenly gained massive attention online, with netizens responding with jokes, clarifications, and even playful critiques.
“Kinuyog pala ako ng mga kabataan dito. Iba pala ibig sabihin ng bembang sa mga batang ito!” he said while laughing during the next day’s broadcast. Despite the unexpected online buzz, Elchico took it all in stride, responding with humor and recognizing the difference in how language is perceived across age groups.
He stressed the significance of recognizing that language naturally evolves with time, influenced by generational, cultural, and societal changes. “Ang ibig sabihin sa amin, ‘pag nabembang ako eh, napagalitan ako nang todo,” he reiterated, pointing out that this is the typical understanding for those in their 40s and above.

“Kailangan itong ipaliwanag dahil natural lang ang mga bagay na may temang sekswal pero hindi niya inakala na ganito na pala ang tingin ng kabataan sa salitang iyon.”
