John Arcilla Reacts to Swarm of Moths in Manila

John Arcilla Sounds the Alarm Over Tropical Moths in Manila

JOHN ARCILLA – Veteran actor John Arcilla expressed deep concern over the sudden swarm of tropical moths spotted across Metro Manila.

John Arcilla has expressed concern over the sudden appearance of Tropical Swallowtail Moths in various parts of Metro Manila. The unexpected sightings of these large moths have sparked conversations online, with many, including Arcilla, noting their potential environmental implications.

The “Heneral Luna” star took to Facebook to share his reaction, emphasizing the ecological significance of these moths. “Yes, it’s very alarming. It signifies a threat in our ecological system,” he stated, accompanying his post with a reposted social media thread by a user named Edriel, also known as EWolf620.

The original thread provided a brief but insightful analysis on the topic, referencing similar occurrences in Singapore. According to the user, the migration of these moths may be attributed to the decreasing availability of their host plants in their natural habitats. As forests continue to shrink and food becomes limited, these insects are likely being forced to search for survival in urban areas.

Echoing the concerns, Arcilla elaborated on the possible effects of this migration. “Continuous disappearances of host plants and forests affect their existence and the human resources in return. Moths and bees are hosts of plant transfers from territories to another. Their extinction will definitely affect the equilibrium of the ecosystem. It is actually disturbing and fretful,” he wrote.

In a related report aired on GMA’s newscast “SONA,” reporter Darlene Cay featured Edriel Lee, a research associate who reassured the public that Tropical Swallowtail Moths are harmless to humans. Lee clarified that these moths do not bite or transmit any disease and are, in fact, native to Southeast Asia, including the Philippines.

Their presence in the city, Lee added, is mainly due to their attraction to artificial lights. With their host plants becoming increasingly rare, these moths are driven to migrate in search of new environments, often ending up in urban areas illuminated by lights.

While harmless to people, their arrival serves as a reminder of the deeper environmental issues impacting local ecosystems.
