What will happen now to the impeachment trial of VP Sara Duterte?
Senator Chiz Escudero leaves the impeachment trial of VP Sara Duterte to the presiding officer of the next Congress.
Previously, with no abstentions, the Senate, the impeachment court, has decided to return the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte to the House of Representatives. This is after Senator Alan Peter Cayetano filed a motion, which amended the one from Senator Bato Dela Rosa, suggesting its dismissal.

The Senate has voted to return to the House of Representatives the impeachment complaint, with an 18-5 result – 18 agreed and 5 objected. While they wait for the House to “certify” that the complaint did not violate the Constitution, one of the prosecutors said that the VP’s impeachment can still legally proceed even without the certification of the House of Representatives that the 20th Congress will pursue the proceedings.
Presiding officer and Senate chief Chiz Escudero clarified that the return does not mean termination. VP was summoned, and if she fails to reply, the trial will continue. He is leaving matters that will arise to be discussed in the 20th Congress, and this will be up to the new presiding officer.
“Kung kailan gagawin yun walang timetable o time period ang nakasaad sa rules namin,” he said.
The 19th Congress is scheduled to adjourn on June 13.
As reported, Duterte is accused six allegations:
- Conspiracy to Assassinate President Marcos, First Lady, and Speaker Romualdez
- Malversation of P612.5 Million in Confidential Funds
- Bribery and Corruption in DepEd
- Unexplained Wealth and Failure to Disclose Assets
- Involvement in Extrajudicial Killings (Davao Death Squad)
- Destabilization, Insurrection, and Public Disorder
