Senate President Chiz Escudero took his oath on Monday as the presiding officer of the impeachment court for Vice President Sara Duterte’s impending impeachment trial. The impeachment was initially scheduled on June 2, but was moved to June 11.
The Senate chief insisted that they must prioritize their legislative agenda and pass significant bills before the 19th Congress expires. Following Escudero, the senator-judges will be taking their oath on Tuesday, June 10, at 4 PM.
As the day of the trial approaches, there are recommendations to fast-track the impeachment trial of the vice president. Senator Risa Hontiveros was in disbelief, hearing the suggestion for the trial to last for three days.
She expressed, “We dragged our feet for several months, and suddenly, we tell the Filipino public that we are able to sift through the evidence and exact accountability from the second-highest official in our land within a period of three days?”
She stressed in an interview that the proposed 19-day schedule may not even be enough for a case this magnitude.
Recently, she underscored the value of a thorough and deliberate process in dealing with the impeachment complaint. She stressed that the trial must not be rushed as it involves a person who holds the second-highest position in the country.
“It’s very difficult to imagine rushing a case this important involving the second-highest official of our country. It’s impossible to think this could be resolved even in 19 days,” she said in an interview.
Hontiveros also shared, “We will only officially hear the seven articles of impeachment tomorrow. That’s when we’ll begin to get a sense of how long and how heavy the case will be.”
