Bongbong Marcos Champions Revival of Pasig River Landmarks
BONGBONG MARCOS – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed to continue government efforts to rehabilitate the Pasig River, aiming to reconnect Filipinos with their heritage.
Marcos has reiterated his administration’s dedication to the restoration and revitalization of the historic areas along the Pasig River. During a ceremony held Saturday evening to inaugurate the lighting of the Jones Bridge, Marcos highlighted the significance of cultural preservation in the Philippines’ ongoing development.
The event, which took place at the Pasig River Esplanade, also celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and China. Addressing attendees from the view deck, President Marcos spoke with the illuminated Jones Bridge—an emblem of Manila’s architectural heritage—in the background.

He stressed that the revival of the Pasig River is not solely focused on aesthetics, but also on reconnecting the people with their historical and cultural identity. Marcos underlined that the river, once a vital route through Manila, holds deep significance and deserves renewed attention.
As part of the plan, the government intends to transform the Pasig River corridor into a dynamic public space by improving its visual appeal and accessibility. Proposed developments include esplanades, pedestrian paths, and parks that will serve as green and cultural hubs for both residents and visitors.

This appearance follows the earlier launch of a key section of the Pasig River Esplanade, situated behind the Manila Central Post Office, which was inaugurated by President Marcos and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos last year. That launch marked the beginning of broader efforts to rehabilitate the river and its iconic surroundings.
The overall initiative is part of a more extensive urban renewal strategy aimed at promoting sustainability, protecting cultural landmarks, and ensuring inclusive growth. Through these efforts, the government seeks to foster public appreciation for the nation’s heritage while advancing environmental and cultural revitalization.
