FREDDIE AGUILAR – The legendary and one of the most respected names in Original Pilipino Music (OPM) has passed away at the age of 72.  

Around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday (May 27, 2025), Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) general counsel’s lawyer George Briones announced the untimely death of the legendary OPM singer.  

The Filipino singer reportedly died at the Philippine Heart Center. Preparations for his burial are already in motion, following Muslim traditions, which require interment within 24 hours. He is survived by his wife Jovie and their children.

Freddie Aguilar rose to fame with his iconic song “Anak,” which became a global hit. The song sold over 33 million copies worldwide and was translated into several languages. Other notable songs include “Bayan Ko” and “Magdalena,” both of which reflected the struggles and hopes of the Filipino people.  

Aside from being a popular musician, Aguilar also served the public in various roles. He was once the national executive vice president of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP).  

Freddie was also appointed as Presidential Adviser on Culture and the Arts during President Rodrigo Duterte’s administration. Later, he became a member of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), where he continued to promote Filipino heritage.

The OPM icon’s death is a huge loss to the music industry and to all who admired his work. However, his songs will continue to live on, reminding Filipinos of their values and love for their country.
