Risa Hontiveros for president? This is what she said about this possibility.
During a briefing, Senator Risa Hontiveros said she is “open to all possibilities” when asked about this possibility.
In the Halalan 2025 or midterm polls, the opposition had surprise wins. Bam Aquino landed in the second spot, and Kiko Pangilinan turned out to be in the 5th spot, which surprised a lot, as in surveys, they often trail behind administration-backed candidates.

With a high standing, Senator Bam expressed about the result, “PARA SA LAHAT NG PILIPINO, taos-pusong pasasalamat sa inyong lahat, sa Diyos, at sa taumbayan na nagtiwala at sumandal sa ating pagmamahal sa bayan.”
Recently, during a briefing on Wednesday, May 21, Senator Hontiveros expressed no definite answer when asked about running for president in the 2028 elections. She is currently midway through her second consecutive term as senator. This means that she is ineligible for re-election in 2028.
“I am not saying no, I am open to all possibilities and that’s what I have been asking my fellow members in the opposition or independent bloc: to be open to all possibilities for the sake of the opposition as well as the masses,” Hontiveros told reporters in a Kapihan sa Senado.
She furthered that there will be a certain progressive or reformist candidate to go against the one who would be endorsed by former President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloc or President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s team.
Hontiveros is open, but according to the female senator, the definite answer will “naturally come somewhere down the road.”
With Pangilinan and Aquino with her in the next Congress, she said that they will serve as a “center of gravity that will serve as a check and balance” and fiscalizers. Her priority right now is unity in these nine months and consolidate to a greater degree than they were able to do following the elections in 2022.
