On Monday, Philippine President Bongbong Marcos expressed that he is open to reconciling with the Duterte family.
In 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.‘s relationship with the Duterte family turned sour. This was early last year, after former President Rodrigo Duterte and his son, Davao Mayor Sebastian Duterte, accused him as a weak leader. Also, they accused him of using “coke.”
In mid-2024, Vice President Sara Duterte resigned from the president’s cabinet and slammed his administration’s alleged irregularities. This conflict got worse after the House of Representatives, spearheaded by Marcos Jr.’s cousin Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, set out an investigation into the Office of the Vice President’s confidential funds and voted for her impeachment.
In March 2025, former President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested and sent to The Hague. He was detained by the International Criminal Court. This was allowed by the administration, and the second-in-command repeatedly blamed the president for this.
On Monday, in the first episode of his podcast, the president expressed that he is open to reconciling with the Duterte family. He doesn’t want any more rift with anyone, and all he needs now is friends.
“Ewan ko. Hangga’t maaari, ang habol ko yung stability, peaceful, para magawa namin ang trabaho namin. Lagi akong bukas sa ganiyan. I’m always open to any approach,” he said.
He wants unity, just like what he advocated when he ran for president in the 2022 elections, and during this time, he teamed up with the vice president. He wants everyone to unite for peace. They may have conflicts and some disagreements in politics, but what matters most is to eradicate the chaos.
“Halika, magtulungan tayo. Kahit na hindi tayo magkasundo sa polisiya, hindi tayo magkasundo, tanggalin natin ang gulo,” he expressed.
