Former US President Joe Biden has cancer.

Former United States President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. His personal office made the announcement on Sunday. The diagnosis came after he suffered from increased urinary symptoms.

In the statement, it added, “On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

His cancer has already spread to other tissues in his body. It furthered, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

The former president and his family are considering multiple treatment options, which include hormone treatment. Biden’s Gleason score of 9 (Group grade 5) means that this is aggressive and likelier than others to grow and spread. Biden’s hormone-sensitive cancer will likely respond to treatment.

Current US President Donald Trump, upon hearing the news, said he and first lady Melania Trump were “saddened to hear about” Biden’s diagnosis.

What is prostate cancer?

This type of cancer develops when the abnormal cells form and grow in the prostate gland. Not all abnormal growths are malignant or cancerous, some are benign. Malignant growths can metastasize or spread to nearby organs and tissues. If removed, it can still grow back.

According to the Urology Care Foundation, some of the symptoms are:

  • Dull pain in the lower pelvic area
  • Frequent urinating
  • Trouble urinating, pain, burning, or weak urine flow
  • Blood in the urine (Hematuria)
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Pain in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of weight
  • Bone pain
