Filipino mountaineer named Philipp Santiago dies during Mount Everest quest.
Mountaineer cousin of Emil Sumangil, Philipp Santiago, dies on Mount Everest at Camp 4 while nearing the summit.
Broadcast journalist Emil Sumangil previously shared that his cousin, Engineer Philipp II Santiago, will soon reach the summit of Mount Everest. It was estimated that he would be there by Thursday, but unfortunately, his journey was cut short at Camp 4.
Nepal news outlet The Himalayan Times reported that the first death on the world’s tallest mountain for the season was recorded, and it was the said Filipino mountaineer. Snowy Horizon Treks Managing Director Bodhraj Bhandari stated that the 45-year-old Santiago died while at Camp IV while preparing for the summit push.
He was part of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar – Snowy Everest Expedition 2025. The exact cause of his death was still unknown. The team members are pushing to the summit, while efforts are exerted to bring Santiago’s remains back to the base camp.
Sumangil mourns for his cousin’s death, and in a post, he expressed, “Our family is asking for prayers for the eternal repose of the soul of our beloved Engr. Philipp PJ Santiago II.”
Camp 4 sits at the edge of the so-called “death zone” at 26,000 feet. This is an area where there’s an absence of supplementary oxygen, which may result in deterioration of bodily functions or death.
According to Santiago’s nephew, Karl Miguel Santiago, the base camp support, the late mountaineer has accordingly always had the urge to “see the edge and come back and tell my story about it” since he was a child. He also advocated for access to clean drinking water and children’s cancer cure.
Santiago said, “Climbing Mount Everest is very little compared to the battles these little warriors are facing everyday and we aim to give attention and awareness to their plight and for their cause.”
