A part of the lungs of the Pope was removed when he was younger and his recovery from his current condition makes it harder. His bronchitis has developed into double pneumonia.

Amid his battle against pneumonia, Pope Francis thought that he might “not make it this time”. There were several instances when he experienced respiratory crises amid his hospitalization.

On his 7th day of confinement in Gemelli hospital, the Pope had a respiratory attack that left him under a critical state for days. His condition even required a transfusion of two (2) counts of blood.

Meanwhile, following it, the condition of the Roman Pontiff showed improvements. His fever was gone and his non-evasive medical ventilation was removed. However, last March 3, the Pope had two (2) new episodes of respiratory crises.

The doctors had to perform two bronchoscopies to remove the large secretions which was “caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm”. His non-evasive medical ventilation resumed.

Meanwhile, based on a recent update from Vatican News as per a statement from the Holy See Press Office, Pope Francis had no new episodes of respiratory crises. His clinical condition remains “stable” and he has returned to some work activities.

“As planned, he utilized supplemental, high-flow oxygenation, and non-invasive mechanical ventilation will be resumed tonight,” the statement of the Holy See Press Office reads.

However, the condition of the Pope remains “guarded” as per the prognosis of the doctors. He is confined in a special papal suite in Gemelli hospital and has participated in the rite of the blessing of the Sacred Ashes. He also received the Eucharist before engaging in some work activities as per the post.

Previously, two (2) officials of Vatican said that Pope Francis had a clash with some cardinals before he was hospitalized.
