“Ma, anong ulam?” became one of the catchiest phrases on social media after being popularized by the viral food vendor Neneng B. However, some people misunderstand its message, thinking it implies that most young people just wait for food from their parents instead of helping out.
On Sunday (March 2, 2025), the latest episode of “Toni Talks” features Geraldine Olmos, who clarified the meaning behind her popular line. The vendor explained that she never meant to say kids should start working early to support their families.
Instead, she simply wants to encourage the youth to be more responsible and helpful at home. She shared that the harshest comments she received were about her parents. Some people assumed that her mother was neglecting her, forcing her to work at such a young age.
Neneng B explained that she was not abandoned or forced to work but was simply doing her part to improve her life. Like many young people, she also dreams of a better future.
The viral vendor emphasized that she is not telling all kids to start working immediately. She just hopes they can contribute in simple ways, especially if their family is struggling. There are young people who, despite their family’s hardships, do not even help with household chores.
“Hindi ko naman sinasabing lahat tayong mga kabataan magtrabaho agad. Ang sinasabi ko lang po, ‘yong tumulong lang po. Kasi may iba pong kabataan na sobrang hirap na po, hindi pa po tumutulong sa mga gawaing-bahay,” Olmos said.
The young lady also shared that their father left them, leaving their mother to raise her and her older brother alone. Despite their situation, she balances her studies and selling food, while her brother is now in college.
