Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero Speaks on Impeachment Trial of VP Sara Duterte
CHIZ ESCUDERO – The Senate President welcomed the offer of Senator Koko Pimentel to help draft the rules for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Senate Pres. Escudero has previously released the proposed timeline for the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Duterte. The tentative start of the trial is on July 30. Currently, the Congress is on a session break which is set to resume in June.
There were calls for the immediate commencement of the impeachment trial but the Senate President does not see a need for a special session. He also did not give a say on having an all-senator caucus to discuss the trial.
The Senate follows an approved legislative calendar which Escudero refused to change for the impeachment trial of Duterte. Meanwhile, he assured that even though they are on a session break, his office continues to review the impeachment rules and draft the amendments.
Recently, Senate Pres. Chiz Escudero revealed that he welcomed the offer of Sen. Koko Pimentel to help in drafting the rules in the impeachment trial of Vice Pres. Sara Duterte. Based on a report on Inquirer, it was through a text message to the reporters that the Senate President revealed the move.
“I welcome and thank Sen. Pimentel’s offer to help draft the proposed rules. I will instruct the legal team to coordinate with him on this matter,” Escudero said.
Previously, Sen. Koko Pimentel expressed that he is willing to lead the drafting of the impeachment rules. Based on the report, he stressed that only five (5) of them in the Senate are lawyers and he is willing to devote his time to the job.
Davao Mayor Baste Duterte previously spoke on Vice Pres. Sara Duterte’s impeachment complaint which he said the Vice President is “unbothered”. According to the Davao Mayor, he is confident that his sister will get through the impeachment issue victoriously as she has a strong legal team.
The lawyers of the Vice President include their father, former Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, and her father-in-law, Lucas Carpio Jr. Mayor Baste also expressed his belief that the Marcos administration is just allegedly using the issue to cover the controversy surrounding the 2025 national budget.
