Vice Ganda recently expressed concern after discovering that a contestant on their noontime show It’s Showtime was not knowledgeable about COMELEC, the Commission on Elections in the Philippines. The moment took place during the weekly finals of the Sexy Babe segment, where a 20-year-old finalist was asked, “Ano ang mensahe mo sa COMELEC?” (What is your message for COMELEC?)

Vice Ganda, visibly surprised, followed up by asking the contestant’s age. When she responded that she was 20 years old, the comedian-host expressed deep concern, exclaiming, “Oh my gosh! That’s bothersome.” The moment sparked discussion among the hosts and audience about the importance of civic awareness, especially among young adults eligible to vote.

Vice Ganda, along with co-host Jhong Hilario, took the opportunity to explain that COMELEC stands for the Commission on Elections. They also inquired whether the contestant had ever encountered information about the government agency through television or social media. After receiving an explanation, the contestant was able to provide a response that touched on the issue of vote-buying.

Despite the contestant’s initial lack of knowledge, one of the judges, actor JC De Vera, still appreciated her eventual answer. He acknowledged her efforts to engage with the topic despite her limited understanding.

COMELEC plays a crucial role in the Philippines as an independent constitutional commission responsible for overseeing and administering elections, plebiscites, initiatives, referendums, and recalls. It ensures free, fair, and credible elections by regulating campaign activities, managing voter registration, and resolving election-related disputes.

This moment on It’s Showtime highlighted the importance of educating young people about their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Vice Ganda’s reaction served as a reminder that being informed about electoral processes is essential, especially for those who are of voting age. The incident has since sparked conversations online about the need for better civic education among the youth.
